Taiwan - Festival Hantu Lapar telah dirayakan selama ribuan tahun. Warga Taiwan memandang festival ini sebagai ajang komunikasi antara manusia dan roh.

Bagi penganut ajaran Tao, Festival Hantu Lapar dirayakan bertepatan dengan kelahiran Dewa Chingsu, yang bermurah hati membebaskan hantu-hantu agar mereka dapat menikmati makanan yang disediakan manusia.Β  Β

Sedangkan dalam kepercayaan Buddha, kesempatan ini adalah sebagai bentuk untuk beramal kepada setan dengan cara membagi-bagikan makanan untuk mereka. Β

Ritual ini diawali dengan persiapan makanan dan pembakaran dupa. Kemudian lentera-lentera itu dinyalakan. Selain lentera, festival diisi dengan pembakaran perahu kertas yang berisi uang kertas mainan. Tujuannya untuk menghibur setan yang berkunjung. Β
