Beberapa spesies yang sering dijadikan peliharaan, yaitu biawak sabana (Varanus exanthematicus), biawak sungai nil (Varanus niloticus), biawak hijau (Varanus prasinus), dan biawak buaya (Varanus salvadorii).

Secara taksonomi, biawak termasuk ke dalam keluarga kadal. Namun, beberapa ciri fisik mereka justru lebih mirip ular. Tidak seperti spesies kadal lain, biawak mempunyai lidah bercabang persis seperti ular.
