Medan - Festival Hantu Lapar atau Zhong Yuan Jie digelar di Vihara Gunung Timur, Jalan Hang Tuah, Kota Medan. Warga etnis Tionghoa antusias memeriahkan acara itu.

Masyarakat etnis Tionghoa melemparkan uang tiruan yang disebut 'uang neraka' untuk dibakar sebagai persembahan, saat Festival Hantu Lapar di Medan, Sumatera Utara, Rabu (30/8/2023).

Dikenal dengan Festival Hantu Lapar atau The Hungry Ghost Festival atau juga Zhong Yuan Jie, festival yang diadakan di Vihara Gunung Timur, Jalan Hang Tuah, Kota Medan ini menjadi sebagai bentuk penghormatan kepada para arwah.

Tampak masyarakat dari etnis Tionghoa memadati Vihara Gunung Timur. Tampak para pengurus vihara menebarkan kertas berwarna kuning. Selain itu ada juga rumah yang terbuat dari bambu.

Kemudian masyarakat Tionghoa yang hadir berdoa. Usai berdoa, terdengar iringan gong saat kertas dan rumah buatan itu dibakar. Tampak kobaran api yang cukup besar berkobar.

Menurut kepercayaan suku Tionghoa, para arwah akan keluar dari neraka dan berkeliaran di bulan ini. Oleh karena itu, diadakan Festival Hantu Lapar menghormati jiwa-jiwa yang telah berpulang.

Seluruh ritual ini nantinya disampaikan kepada Sang Buddha. Nantinya, Sang Buddha yang membagi berkat dari adanya ritual ini.

Pengurus Vihara Gunung Timur, Eddy Salim, mengatakan ritual ini juga sebagai permohonan agar para arwah yang berkeliaran di Bulan Hantu tidak mengganggu makhluk hidup di bumi.

Dari penuturannya, festival ini juga diberikan kepada para arwah yang semasa hidupnya sebagai gelandangan. Hal itu diwakilkan dari rumah buatan yang nantinya dibakar.
